Research FAQ

What is the GSMA and why does it matter for eSIM?

The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) is the international trade body for mobile network operators. It develops and maintains the technical standards that govern eSIM technology, including SGP.22 for consumer eSIM. These standards ensure interoperability between devices and provisioning servers from different manufacturers.

How does the EU Roam Like at Home regulation work?

EU Regulation 2022/612 abolished retail roaming surcharges for EU/EEA residents traveling within the EU/EEA. This means EU residents with domestic mobile contracts can use their phone in other EU countries at domestic prices, subject to fair use policies. Non-EU travelers are not covered.

What is network priority and how does it affect eSIM users?

Network priority determines which users get bandwidth first during congestion. MVNO users typically receive lower priority than direct carrier customers. During peak periods, this can result in significantly reduced speeds for eSIM users. Premium MVNO agreements may include higher priority tiers.
